How did I start yoga?
I remember first doing yoga in either 2001 or 2002 following a TV program before work. I remember the relaxed feeling after doing it, and how good it felt.
I started Ashtanga in 2003, or it could have been 2004. I did an Ashtanga introductory course at North Sydney Yoga with Angelika Knoerzer on the advice of a friend Emma. I remember being the stiffest in the class by a long long way. Angelika kept me doing cat and cow pose for the first few weeks. I liked it, but couldn't afford the time or the money to keep going at the shala, so I started doing it at home. I would say that until June 2012 I practiced Ashtanga approximately once a week, though if I think back now to what I was doing, it was hardly Ashtanga. I was doing quite a few Suriya Namaskara As with no holds. Then a modified standing which included uktasasana, a few worriors and a tree pose. Then for seated I would alternate between Pashimattanasana and Purvattanasana a few times before doing spinal twists lying down and a really long shoulderstand, always finishing with a long Savasana.
Over the next few years, I flitted in and out of various yoga classes, be they "vinyasa flow" "power yoga" "pilates" "Bikram" "Hatha" and whatever else was going at the time. I was still going with my Ashanga home practice, but it was only really to keep back pain at bay, and to try to keep basic flexibility while I often competed competitively in sports such as distance running and triathlon.
By April 2012 in Mexico I was doing about five yoga classes a week, but no Ashtanga classes. I finally went to another Ashtanga class in early June 2012. This time with an instructor named Coco and the yoga really clicked with me, and I've stayed with purely Ashtanga ever since. Soon after starting classes with Coco I began to develop a daily home practice, and kept progressing with that until I made it to Mysore in August 2013.
How much has it cost me?
2003: Ashtanga beginner course with Angelika Knoerzer at North Sydney Yoga AUD100
2004-2010: Not much. A couple of yoga mats and various classes here and there, usually with friends. I would say about AUD400 total over those years.
2011: Bikram Yoga Brookvale with Sonia and Paulie: Introductory 10 day intensive AUD20, beginner month AUD99.
2012: New Mat MXN200, 2nd Mat USD100, yoga towels AUD70, Classes MXN2400, Michael Gannon Day: MXN650
2013: Yoga classes in Mexico MXN4500, 7 day retreat with Anuraag Vasallo and Natalia Paisano EUR105, shala fees at Ashtanga Yoga Berlin EUR40, Two and a half months in Mysore USD4000, North Sydney Yoga shala fees AUD210.
